On March 29, 2023, the Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was arrested by Russia while on assignment, accused of Espionage - the first case of an American journalist detained since the Cold War. Evan’s true crime? Journalism. When Russia invaded Ukraine, journalists became enemies of the state and fled the country, but Evan stayed and continued reporting the facts. On March 29, 2024, he turned one year wrongfully detained in Russia. One year in which his words and journalism are missing. To honor and stand up for Evan, the Wall Street Journal published his Missing Articles. A void of information on the cover and across the paper where Evan's words should have been. A historic edition in 134 years of The Journal made in partnership with its Newsroom, where blank spaces represented Evan’s missing journalism.
The Missing Articles prompted the United States Secretary of State, congressional leaders from both parties, and President Biden to stand together and demand Evan’s release. Evan Gerhskovich is not a spy. And we will keep telling his story, until he can tell his own.
